The Lex Lata Internship Programme

The Lex Lata Internship Programme is a research-based internship for Law undergraduates, within and outside Africa.

The interns are tasked with conducting research and writing projects on specific aspects of international law and comparative constitutionalism in Africa. The internship is completely virtual and thus, all activities of the internship are held online.

The interns conduct research, make presentations, write papers, reports and essays, as well as briefs on happenings in international and local law.

Candidates for the research internship programme are required to have the following qualifications.

  • Be a 400/500 level law student in any recognized university in Nigeria, (or a 300/ 400 level for African students in foreign universities)
  • Be on a First Class or high Second Class Upper (2:1) grade
  • Be willing to intern for a period of 12 months (1 year)

Note that applications for the internship position are in cycles, and we will not accept applications after the end of each application cycle. Further requirements for candidates would be added to the application call.





Junior Research Fellowship

Candidates for the Junior Research Fellowship are required to have the following qualifications.

  • A First Class or high Second Class Upper (2:1) degree (4.0/5.0) in Law.
  • At least one well-researched paper fit for publication in a peer-reviewed journal
  • The candidate will undertake to prepare at least 2 research papers every year, and make one presentation during the general conference of the Centre.
  • The candidate will undertake to participate actively in the intellectual life of the centre and perform other duties that may be assigned to him by the Executive Director.




Research Fellowship

Candidates for the Research Fellowship are required to have the following qualifications

  • First Class or high Second Class Upper (2:1) degree (4.0/5.0) in Law.
  • A Master of Law degree from a world-class institution of higher learning.
  • At least two well-researched papers published in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • The candidate will undertake to prepare at least 2 research papers every year, and make one presentation during the general conference of the Centre.
  • The candidate will undertake to participate actively in the intellectual life of the centre and perform other duties that may be assigned to him by the Executive Director.




Senior Research Fellowship

Candidates for the Senior Research Fellowship are required to have the following qualifications

  • First Class or high Second Class Upper (2:1) degree (4.0/5.0) in Law.
  • A Master of Law degree from a world-class institution of higher learning.
  • A Ph.D degree in Law from a world class institution of higher learning.
  • At least three well-researched papers published in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • The candidate will undertake to prepare at least 2 research papers every year, and make one presentation during the general conference of the Centre.
  • The candidate will undertake to participate actively in the intellectual life of the centre and perform other duties that may be assigned to him by the Executive Director.

  • What does the internship entail?
  • The internship is research-based. Interns will be required to conduct research, prepare reports, make presentations and write articles on assigned topics on specific aspects of international law and comparative constitutionalism in Africa. Interns also will, from time to time, prepare briefs and commentaries on current happenings in the international and local law sphere.

  • What will participants gain from this experience?
  • The internship provides an opportunity for all-round growth and development. This programme presents participants with opportunities to develop their research, writing, analytical, presentation, communication and interpersonal skills as well as expose them to the ins and outs of a professional working environment. Interns will be exposed to a wide network of intellectuals and academics with expertise in diverse areas of international law; access to mentorship, career and professional advice as well as further career opportunities.

  • Who can apply for the internship programme?
  • Applications are open to African Law students in their second & third year of undergraduate studies, in Nigerian, African & foreign universities

  • How long will the internship programme last?
  • The programme will last for twelve (12) months. Upon completion, interns will receive a certificate of participation.

  • Where is the internship located?
  • Interns can work remotely as most of the work is virtual. Physical presence is not a requirement. However, participants must have a working device with a stable internet connection.

  • is this a paid internship?
  • This is not a paid internship, however, participants will gain a lot from this opportunity, as stated previously.

  • What will I need to apply for the internship?
  • Applicants are expected to submit the following:

    • A copy of the curriculum vitae (CV)

    • Personal essay stating why you want to join the Lex Lata Internship Programme

    • A writing sample on any area of International Law or Constitutionalism in Africa (1 - 2 pages)

  • What is the recruitment process?
  • Applications for the Lex Lata Internship Programme are currently closed. However, the recruitment process includes an online application, a written test and an oral interview.
